IELTS Academic is intended mainly for undergraduate or postgraduate study and for professional registration. The complete test lasts about 2 hours and 45 minutes.
The Listening and Speaking sections are the same. Academic uses university-level Reading texts and a visual-information Writing Task 1, while General Training uses everyday and workplace Reading texts and a letter for Writing Task 1.
You read three sections totaling about 2,150–2,750 words and answer 40 questions in 60 minutes. Tasks include multiple choice, True/False/Not Given, Yes/No/Not Given, matching, completion, diagram-label, and short-answer questions.
Task 1 requires at least 150 words describing visual information such as a graph, table, chart, or diagram. Task 2 requires an essay of at least 250 words about a point of view, argument, or problem.
It is a recorded face-to-face interview lasting 11–14 minutes. Part 1 is an interview, Part 2 is a prepared long turn, and Part 3 is a deeper discussion connected to the Part 2 topic.
The curated Free tier never uses Tokens. Additional question-bank packs can be unlocked permanently with Tokens or a card, while evaluations and generated study tools use their separately displayed Token prices.
